Monte Music Festival 2018
The 16th edition of Monte Music Festival, presented by Fundação Oriente and Cidade de Goa, will be held from the 2nd to the 4th February 2018 at the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount, Old Goa. With its first edition in 2002, after the restoration of the Chapel by Fundação Oriente, the festival has continuously gathered attention and interest from Western and Eastern music and dance enthusiasts.
Held at one of the most spectacular locations in Goa, the Monte Music Festival is a unique event, which has carved a niche of its own among all cultural events held in the State. With performances held inside the old heritage chapel and in its courtyard with a backdrop of the picturesque Chorão and Divar islands and the River Mandovi, the festival begins at sunset and goes on till about 9pm. With a unique blend of international, national and local artists, Monte Music Festival has the privilege to count on an annually growing number of followers that make this pilgrimage to witness a celebration of cultural dialogue, heritage, music and dance.
The Monte Music Festival has the support of the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology Government of Goa and the Archdiocese of Goa, the ICCR, Government of India, Furtado’s Music Company, International Centre Goa and the Goa College of Hospitality and Culinary Education.
In 2018, Fundação Oriente completes 30 years of activity. To celebrate this occasion, they will present one of the most acclaimed Portuguese fadistas. Pedro Moutinho and its musicians will render a much awaited performance of the Portuguese soulful genre on the 4 th of February at 6pm. The festival will open on 2nd February with a Traditional Odissi Dance recital by the Mitali D’Souza and her two daughters, Diya and Risa and will end with a concert by the Aradhon Choir from Goa, which will delight the audience with their renditions of mainly Konkani hymns.
At sunset on the 3rd February, folk singer Mangka along with the Laihui Ensemble will delight the audience with traditional songs from the State of Manipur. The same evening, The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount will be the stage for an outstanding programme of sacred music delivered by The Bangalore Men.
Closing the festival on 4th February, the celebrated pianist Marialena Fernandes will perform together with Barna Bánfi on the saxophone and mezzo soprano Mareike Jankowski, themes from Handel, Dvorak, Messiaen, Bartholdy and Liszt.
