For live musicians, hearing clearly can be the difference between a confident performance and a difficult one. Monitoring is not simply about volume. It affects timing, tuning, ensemble awareness, vocal health and the ability to respond naturally to an audience and fellow performers.

The two main approaches are stage monitors, often called wedges, and in-ear monitors, commonly shortened to IEMs. Wedges have been a familiar sight on stages for decades: loudspeakers placed on the floor and aimed towards performers. In-ear monitors deliver a personalised mix through earpieces worn by each musician.

Neither option is automatically better in every situation. The right choice depends on the venue, repertoire, technical resources, budget and, perhaps most importantly, what allows performers to make music with confidence.

What are stage monitors?

Stage monitors are loudspeakers positioned on the stage, usually at the feet of performers. They are fed a monitor mix from the sound desk, allowing singers and instrumentalists to hear vocals, instruments, click tracks or cues independently of the audience-facing PA system.

A small chamber ensemble might use one discreet wedge for a singer, while a large amplified concert could require several wedges across the stage. Each may have its own mix, although the degree of personal control depends on the sound system and available mixing channels.

For many musicians, wedges remain the most intuitive form of monitoring. The sound comes from the room and is shared with others on stage, much like acoustic ensemble playing.

Advantages of stage monitors

They feel natural and communal.
A stage monitor lets performers hear not only their assigned mix but also the broader acoustic environment. This can be particularly valuable in classical crossover, opera, musical theatre and ensemble work, where musicians rely on subtle visual and sonic communication.

They are straightforward to use.
A wedge system is generally easy to understand. A performer can ask for “more voice” or “less piano”, and the engineer can make an adjustment quickly. There is no need to insert earpieces, manage wireless bodypacks or worry about ear-tip fit.

They preserve a sense of the room.
Some performers find in-ears isolating, especially when playing for an audience. With wedges, the energy of applause, the reverberation of the hall and the response of the crowd remain part of the performance experience.

They can be more affordable at entry level.
A basic wedge setup may be less expensive than equipping an entire group with quality in-ear systems. For occasional performances in small venues, existing house monitor systems can also remove the need for musicians to invest in personal equipment.

They work well for players who move freely.
Although a performer can move outside a wedge’s coverage, there is no wireless system to manage and no bodypack attached to clothing. For some theatrical performances, this simplicity is useful.

Disadvantages of stage monitors

They add volume to the stage.
This is the central drawback. Monitor speakers contribute significant sound energy, which can spill into vocal microphones and other open mics. The louder the stage becomes, the harder it is for the front-of-house engineer to achieve clarity for the audience.

They increase the risk of feedback.
When microphones and speakers share the same stage, feedback is always a possibility. Vocalists may need high monitor levels to hear themselves, particularly over drums, amplified instruments or a large orchestra, creating a difficult balancing act.

Mixes are less personal.
Even when there are several wedges, performers often share mixes. What helps the vocalist may be too loud for the violinist; what helps the drummer may overwhelm the keyboard player. Individual control is limited compared with a dedicated in-ear mix.

They can affect hearing over time.
Long rehearsals and performances at high stage volume can contribute to hearing fatigue and potential hearing damage. This is a serious consideration for all professional musicians, but particularly for those working frequently in amplified settings.

They complicate microphone placement and visual design.
Wedges take up stage space, can obstruct sightlines and may clash with a carefully designed concert presentation. In orchestral or recital settings, they can be visually intrusive.

What are in-ear monitors?

In-ear monitors deliver sound directly into the ears through wired or wireless earpieces. Each performer typically receives a dedicated mix, sent from a monitor desk, digital mixing console or personal monitoring system.

Professional systems often use wireless transmitters and bodypacks, enabling performers to move around the stage. The earpieces may be universal-fit models with replaceable tips or custom-moulded monitors made to fit an individual’s ears.

The sound can include a carefully balanced mix of the ensemble, one’s own instrument or voice, spoken cues, backing tracks and a click track. Ambient microphones can also be added to capture room sound and audience response.

Advantages of in-ear monitors

They provide a personalised mix.
This is the strongest argument for IEMs. Each musician can receive a tailored balance at a comfortable volume. A singer can prioritise pitch reference and vocal detail, while a percussionist can emphasise a click track and a conductor can receive production cues.

For a classical musician appearing in amplified work, this can be transformative. A solo cellist, for example, may need their own instrument, piano, conductor, orchestra and a modest amount of audience ambience. With IEMs, that balance can be built specifically for them.

They lower stage volume.
Removing wedges from the stage can dramatically reduce spill and make the overall sound cleaner. Front-of-house engineers gain more control, microphone feedback becomes less likely and performers can often hear more detail at lower levels.

They can support hearing protection.
Well-fitted in-ears create passive isolation from surrounding noise. This allows performers to monitor at safer levels than they might with loud wedges. However, this benefit depends on good habits. Turning IEMs up excessively is still risky.

They improve consistency.
A carefully prepared in-ear mix can remain stable from venue to venue. Wedges interact with each room, stage surface and PA configuration, whereas IEMs can offer a more repeatable experience. This is particularly helpful on tours, festival stages and complex productions with limited soundcheck time.

They allow greater mobility.
With a reliable wireless system, performers can move across the stage without losing their monitoring position. This is valuable for conductors, presenters, singers and musicians involved in staged or immersive performances.

They make complex productions easier to manage.
Click tracks, synchronised video, electronic layers and backstage talkback are all easier to integrate through in-ear systems. As music technology becomes more central to live production, IEMs often provide the flexibility required.

Disadvantages of in-ear monitors

They can feel isolating.
Many musicians initially dislike the sense of separation from the room. The audience may seem distant, and normal on-stage conversation can become awkward. This can be especially disconcerting in classical performance, where listening to a hall’s acoustic response is part of artistic decision-making.

Ambient microphones can help, but they require careful mixing. Too much ambience can make the mix unfocused, while too little can leave performers feeling detached.

They require more preparation and technical skill.
A successful IEM setup depends on good earphones, reliable wireless coordination, properly managed gain levels and thoughtful monitor mixing. The system is not inherently difficult, but it demands more attention than placing a wedge on stage.

The initial cost can be substantial.
Entry-level wired systems are accessible, but professional wireless systems, quality earpieces and custom moulds add up quickly. For a full band or ensemble, the investment can be significant.

A poor mix is intensely personal.
A bad wedge mix may be frustrating, but a poor in-ear mix is delivered directly into the performer’s ears. Excessive brightness, an unbalanced vocal, sudden level changes or missing cues can be distracting and stressful. Proper soundchecks are essential.

There are possible technical failures.
Wireless dropouts, depleted batteries, radio-frequency interference and damaged cables can interrupt monitoring. Experienced productions carry spare cables, batteries and backup plans, but smaller events may not have that resilience.

They can alter vocal and instrumental technique.
Singers in particular may need time to adapt. The occlusion effect can make one’s own voice sound unusually present or resonant inside the head, encouraging performers to sing differently. Wind and brass players, as well as string players dependent on acoustic feedback, may also need rehearsal time before feeling fully comfortable.

Which is better for classical and live music performance?

For many amplified live shows, in-ear monitors offer the stronger technical solution. They reduce stage volume, give performers more control and support cleaner sound for the audience. They are particularly effective where electronics, backing tracks, click tracks, moving performers or multiple vocalists are involved.

But stage monitors remain valuable. In a small acoustic venue, a folk-classical collaboration, a choral performance with modest reinforcement or an ensemble that relies heavily on shared listening, wedges may feel more immediate and musical. They also provide a practical option when budgets and technical infrastructure are limited.

The best approach is often a hybrid one. A singer might use in-ears for detailed monitoring while ambient microphones restore audience connection. A conductor may use a discreet in-ear feed for cues, while instrumentalists retain low-level wedges. Some performers use one in-ear and one open ear, though this should be approached cautiously because it can create uneven exposure and an unbalanced listening experience.

Practical advice for musicians

If you are considering IEMs, start by using them in rehearsal rather than debuting them during an important concert. Spend time refining your mix and make sure you can hear the musical information you genuinely need, not simply everything available.

Invest in a secure fit. Universal earphones with good foam or silicone tips can work well, but custom moulds offer better comfort, isolation and consistency for regular professional use. Keep volumes conservative, and consider a limiter where available.

If you use wedges, ask for a focused mix rather than more volume. Positioning, microphone technique and stage layout can often solve problems more effectively than turning the monitor up. Protecting hearing should remain a priority regardless of the system.

Ultimately, monitoring should serve the performance rather than dominate it. The best choice is the one that lets you listen deeply, respond freely and communicate clearly with the people around you. For some musicians that will be the shared sound of a stage wedge. For others, it will be the precision and control of in-ear monitors. The important thing is to choose deliberately, rehearse properly and treat hearing as one of the most valuable instruments you have.
