Legendary conductor Zubin Mehta headlines the Symphony Orchestra of India’s Spring 2025 Season, featuring masterpieces by Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more, alongside an Opera Gala with exceptional soloists. Experience world-class orchestral magic in Mumbai.
The Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI), the nation’s only full-time professional orchestra, is set to captivate audiences with its highly anticipated Spring 2025 Season, running from January 25 to February 15, 2025. Featuring the legendary Maestro Zubin Mehta and the debut of Sir Mark Elder, this season promises to be a monumental celebration of classical and operatic excellence.
Khushroo N. Suntook, Chairman of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and Co-founder of SOI, shared his enthusiasm:
"The SOI Spring 2025 Season promises to be an extraordinary celebration of music, with legendary conductors and exceptional soloists joining forces to deliver a series of unforgettable concerts... We invite the audiences around the country to join us and witness the grand SOI Spring 2025 Season.”
Opening Night
The season begins with Maestro Zubin Mehta conducting a masterful programme featuring Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2—performed by acclaimed pianist Alexander Gadjiev—and Dvořák's Symphony No. 7. Chopin’s concerto, celebrated for its lyrical beauty, promises to be a highlight of the evening.
Mrs. Mehroo Jeejeebhoy of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation expressed her excitement:
"We are indeed fortunate in Mumbai to have a season of concerts coming up with Maestro Zubin Mehta conducting masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire in four concerts with the Symphony Orchestra of India. The three programmes will include symphonies by Dvořák, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, everybody’s favourite Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2, and an Opera Gala with a stellar cast of singers.”
A Symphonic Masterclass
The second concert presents Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, known for its grandeur and triumphant finale, alongside Tchaikovsky’s dramatic and emotive Symphony No. 4 in F minor, a work exploring themes of fate and resilience. Maestro Mehta’s interpretation of these two masterpieces promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Opera Gala Extravaganza
On February 7 and 9, opera enthusiasts are in for a treat with the Opera Gala. Featuring excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen and Verdi’s La Traviata, the performances will bring together 200 musicians, including Living Voices Mumbai and The Singing Tree Choir from the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation. Soloists Roberta Mantegna, Olesya Petrova, Luciano Ganci, and George Petean will add their voices to these timeless works.
Grand Finale
The season concludes with Sir Mark Elder, one of Britain’s most esteemed conductors, leading the orchestra in a programme featuring Beethoven’s revolutionary Symphony No. 3 ("Eroica"), along with Weber’s Overture to Oberon and Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo, and Finale.
