With love, from India

In its concert series titled “With love, from India”, The Capital City Minstrels showcases music by Indian composers, as well as international composers and groups influenced by India. The choir will perform two concerts in Delhi, then take the program to the UK from June 1-15 and perform in Edinburgh, Belfast and London.

The Capital City Minstrels (CCM) has entertained music lovers for 24 years – taking choral music to different heights in India and surprising audiences in different avatars. Each CCM concert brings something new by way of genre and repertoire. This season is no different with its show titled “With love, from India”. The concert series focuses both on the influence of India on international composers and musicians and highlights choral music by Indian composers. Showcasing A.R. Rehman, The Beatles, Rabindranath Tagore, Reena Esmail, Gustav Holst, Queen and more, it is a rich repertoire spanning a century. It will entertain, intrigue and surprise audiences with the connections and influence of Indian music on the world stage.

CCM concerts in Delhi:

May 25, India International Centre, 6:30 PM The Repertoire

The repertoire includes choral music by Indian composers, inspired by classical Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, popular Bollywood tunes rearranged for choirs and traditional Indian folk music. Complementing these are compositions from western composers and music groups, influenced by Indian instruments and music. The program features A.R. Rehman’s Oscar-winning piece “Jai Ho” from the Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire; classical British composer Gustav Holtz’ “Hymns from the Rig Veda”; Reena Esmail’s “Tarekita” – which blends Indian and Western classical music traditions. The series features popular music by international bands like The Beatles (to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their visit to India), and Indian-origin British lead of Queen, Freddie Mercury’s, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Musical traditions from different regions of India are showcased with the iconic Bengali song “Purano shei diner kotha” by Rabindranath Tagore (influenced by Scottish music); Garo Christian music traditions blending in a South African song “Thuma Mina”; a Konkani festive song “Aeyaya Balano Sakkad, and others.

About CCM

The Capital City Minstrels (CCM) comprises people of all ages and nationalities from all walks of life – students, musicians, doctors, lawyers, architects, teachers, development professionals, corporate executives, diplomats, and more. Set up in 1994, the choir is now in its 24th year. In this time, CCM has performed more than 200 concerts at prestigious venues around the Indian capital of New Delhi and in many cities within and outside India. It has performed from a wide repertoire – from the earliest choral music to the entire spectrum of western classical music, from opera to ballads, folk songs, Broadway musicals, rock, pop, jazz and Indian music arranged for choir performances. CCM has collaborated and sung with international choirs like the Yale Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415, Le Beau Soleil from Switzerland and the Mixed Voices from Germany. The choir is taking “With love, from India” to the UK on their 2018 tour of Edinburgh, Belfast and London from June 1-15, 2018.

About the Conductor

Lindsay Ross Boyd has been teaching and working in music education since 2009 with a special focus on India since 2011. She is currently the Head of the Music Department at Pathways World School in Gurgaon and Music Director and Conductor of The Capital City Minstrels, the premier performing choir in New Delhi. In addition to conducting wind band and chorus, she was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Buffalo Community Orchestra in Buffalo, Minnesota, USA. Lindsay has recently published a wind band piece, “Malkauns” under Hal Leonard Publishing Company that includes aspects of Hindustani music for a traditional western ensemble. Ms. Boyd received her Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Minnesota, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.
