Brillante – The Nagaland Piano Festival is back for its second edition this October 29 – 31, 2019!
The first edition of Brillante – The Nagaland Piano Festival was held from September 28th – 30th 2017 at RCEMPA Jotsoma in Kohima. The festival witnessed Tatiana Dichenko (Russian pianist and instructor – Furtados Mumbai), Pradyumna Singn Manot (Proprietor 12 Keys Kolkata and jazz pianist) and Nagaland’s very own concert artiste Nise Meruno as resource persons, judges and performers. 85 pianists contended for a place in the state-wide Piano Competition out of which 35 were adjudged to the Preliminary Round by Khyochano TCK, Bethel Tsuzu, Zingrin Shishak, Sahu Peseyie and Ezono Kithan John – all veteran pianists and renowned instructors of Nagaland.
Aims and Objectives
- To demonstrate a high level of performance and teaching through concerts, masterclasses and workshops
- To provide a platform and forum for local teachers and students to explore a deeper understanding of piano studies
- To provide an opportunity for all deserving pianists to compete in a piano competition
“In Nagaland, the study of the Piano, as an instrument, can be regarded as one the most developed and progressed areas of classical musical study. With the development of society and the support for ‘soft skills’ education, Nagaland’s pianists are an emerging workforce in the industry. There are more pianists in higher music education and professional occupation than any other instruments in Nagaland. Moreover, with piano students accounting for at least 60% of the total enrolment body, I believe, we are poised to hold this festival and develop this area to a higher level. By doing so, we encourage the next generation of pianists and provide a platform that has never been available in our State before. All piano teachers and music institutions are requested to lend your support by participating in this festival. You can do so by attending the festival events and participating in the competition by sending students. Eligibility
The competition is open to all Indian nationals from the age of eight and above.
Pre-screening
To qualify for the competition, the applicant will need to pass the pre-screening round which is based on video submissions prepared by the applicants and sent via WhatsApp to: +91 7085889909. You will have to submit your name, date of birth and the piece played in the video. The length of the piece or excerpt is not to be more than 3 mins and not less than one minute. Once you submit your video please check that you get a confirmation message to inform you that your video has been received.
Pre-screening repertoire
This year will have an ‘open’ repertoire where the applicant can perform any piece of their choice from any of the classical music periods. Self-composed pieces will not be entertained. The purpose of this is to see that the applicant has basic adequate technical and musical ability to progress onto the semi final round.
Registration
In both categories, a nominal fee of INR 500 will be charged per student, and scanned copies of the registration forms to be mailed to [email protected]. Registration forms can be downloaded here.
Official IDs will have to be submitted.
Clear photocopies of pieces played will have to be submitted prior to start of the performance.
Semi-Finals and Final round repertoire
Once selected, the candidates will have to perform to a live audience at RCEMPA, Kohima. In both categories just ONE piece will have to be performed. However, the candidate is advised to prepare more than one piece.
It is important to note that the selection of the piece and the delivery is critical here as the candidates will be judged on difficulty, technique, musicality and performance. Five finalists will then be short-listed after the Semi-Finals from each category to enter the Finals.
The Grand Finale will be held on the last day of the festival.
