Midori performs in Sri Lanka for the Chamber Music Society of Colombo’s Education Fund
On the 26th of September at 7 pm at the Lionel Wendt Theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC) will present arguably, the most important classical music concert of the year. The extraordinary violinist, Midori, with Ieva Jokubaviciute, piano.
Midori, who will be making a one day stop in Colombo to perform in aid of the Education Fund of the CMSC, a top tier Cultural Organization in the region, says,
“I am honoured to join you in celebrating the Chamber Music Society’s Education Fund.”
The new Fund, which Midori is the Patron of, will help in the discovery and training of some of the most talented young Sri Lankan classical musicians.
The founder of the CMSC, Lakshman Joseph-de Saram said,
“I am deeply gratified to know, and I speak for all the fine musicians, the Board and funders of the CMSC, that we, in a relatively short ten year span, have come to a point where making a positive and hopefully lasting impact on this country’s classical music scene, is possible. I look at Midori’s concert as a warm acknowledgment of the hard work, talent, persistence and focused vision of all involved. We are grateful.”
The virtuoso and educator Midori has maintained a sustained international presence on the highest level for almost three decades, first as a performer, and increasingly as a musical community engagement advocate, and educator. She currently performs close to 100 concerts a year worldwide, leads varied community-involving and charitable projects, and serves on the violin faculty at the USC Thornton School of Music as a Judge Widney Professor of Music. She is also on the faculty of the elite Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Among many honours Midori has received in recent years, she was named a Messenger of Peace by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and received the prestigious Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Collaborating with her is the virtuoso Lithuanian pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute. Jokubaviciute’s powerfully and intricately crafted performances have earned her critical acclaim throughout North America and Europe. Her ability to communicate the essential substance of a work has led critics to describe her as possessing ‘razor-sharp intelligence and wit’ and ‘subtle, complex, almost impossibly detailed and riveting in every way’ (The Washington Post) and as ‘an artist of commanding technique, refined temperament and persuasive insight.’(The New York Times). In 2006, she was honoured as a recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.
