Flautist Katherine Bicknell and harpist Daniela Iolkicheva join the SOI in Mozart’s Flute and Harp concerto written in 1778. The piece belongs to the genre Sinfonia Concertante, the forerunner of the 19th-century double and triple concertos, in which two or more solo instruments have prominent parts as in a concerto, and yet are a part of the total ensemble, as in a symphony. The concerto is a charming and happy work for a difficult and then unusual instrumental combination.
The orchestra will conclude the evening with Sibelius’s second symphony, which enjoys extraordinary popularity for its individualistic tonal language, dark wind colouring, muted string writing, simple folk-like themes, and distinctly “national” flavour. Its grandiose finale was associated with the struggle for Finland’s independence and the opposition to Russian sanctions on Finnish language and culture.
