Joseph Toltz is a music researcher and administrator at the University of Sydney. From 2014-2018 he was co-Investigator on “Performing the Jewish Archive”, a four-year UK Arts & Humanities Council large grant. In 2017 he curated the festival “Out of the Shadows: rediscovering Jewish music and theatre” at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the fourth of five performance festivals sponsored by the grant. A former fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, he is currently co-authoring a book with Dr Anna Boucher on the first collection of Holocaust songs (to be published by Manchester University Press in 2024). He has co-produced a short documentary film, Singing Up the Past, which tells the story of Guta Goldstein and her musical experience and memories as a child survivor of the Łódź Ghetto.
