# Yuja Wang documentary to explore the cost of virtuosity

A new documentary directed by Lorna Tucker will offer an intimate portrait of pianist Yuja Wang at a pivotal point in her career.

Titled *YUJA*, the film follows the Chinese-American pianist beyond the glare of the concert platform, examining the intensity, isolation and scrutiny that have accompanied her ascent as one of classical music’s most recognisable figures.

At 39, Wang is celebrated for a fearless command of the repertoire, extraordinary technical command and a stage persona that has consistently challenged convention. Her musical choices, fashion and public image have attracted both acclaim and criticism—often exposing the gendered and racial expectations imposed on an Asian woman in classical music.

But *YUJA* is not presented as a conventional career retrospective. With what is described as unprecedented access, Tucker’s film explores the pressure behind a life of more than 100 concerts a year: the pursuit of perfection, the loneliness of constant travel and the private doubts that can surface even at the height of success.

The documentary asks a more searching question: what happens when an artist whose identity has been so closely bound to performance begins to question her relationship with the music itself?

Tucker, whose previous films include *Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist*, blends concert footage with memory and reconstruction to trace the forces that have shaped Wang’s singular artistic voice. The film is also photographed by two-time Academy Award nominee Seamus McGarvey.

*YUJA* is a co-production between Sky UK and Arte. It opens in UK cinemas on 10 September, with a Sky release expected later in the month. A Q&A with Wang and Tucker is scheduled at London’s Curzon Soho on 11 September.

For an artist long framed as classical music’s irrepressible powerhouse, *YUJA* promises something more revealing: a portrait of the person behind the virtuosity, weighing the meaning—and the price—of greatness.
