A 5-day music festival with a focus on classical guitar education.

The Monsoon Music Festival is a music festival with an international concert series and a focus on guitar education. Masterclasses, workshops and lectures are scheduled during the day. Each evening of the weekend (Friday-Sunday) will have two concerts by our featured artistes – a western classical performance followed by an Indian classical performance. There will be a student recital on the last evening (Tuesday).

Boyd Meets Girl, husband and wife duo, features cellist Laura Metcalf and classical guitarist Rupert Boyd. Performing works from the baroque to modern day, the duo has given performances throughout the United States and Australia.

New York-based Australian classical guitarist Rupert Boyd is acclaimed as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation. He has been described byThe Washington Post as “truly evocative”, and by Classical Guitar Magazine as “a player who deserves to be heard.” He has performed across four continents, from New York’s Carnegie Hall, to festivals in Europe, China, India, Nepal, the Philippines and Australia. Rupert Boyd has three commercially released albums. Fantasías, his most recent solo CD, was released in April this year has already been meet with critical acclaim, having been described as “a high quality achievement” by The Canberra Times, as “compelling ‘can’t put it down’ listening” by the Canberra Critics Circle, and “a ‘must hear’ experience” by Minor 7th.

American cellist Laura Metcalf, acclaimed for her “gorgeous cello legatos” (Washington Post) and her “sensitive, melodic touch” (Blog Critics Magazine), is known for her compelling solo and chamber music performances both worldwide and in her home of New York City. Her debut solo album, First Day was released in April 2016 and debuted at #7 on the Billboard classical chart. Laura Metcalf has appeared on the David Letterman and Conan O’Brien late-night shows, as well as the Today Show and The View, and at the US Open, New York Fashion Week, and in Johannesburg, South Africa with legendary rap artist Nas.

R2T2 Guitar Duo

In 2011, Raphaël Bereau and Tizoc Romero joined forces in 2011 to create the “R2T2” Guitar Duo. Their repertoire is developed around composers such as: D. Scarlatti, I. Albéniz, Granados E., C.Tedesco, D. Bogdanovic, among others.

Currently based in Paris, the R2T2 guitar duo has performed in North America, and across Europe including Paris, Vienna, Alcobaca, Ontinyent, Barcelona and Gorizia.

They have been featured musicians at the International Guitar Festival of Paris in 2014 and the International Guitar Festival of Elx in Spain 2015.

In November 2014, R2T2 published their first CD with Baros Records.

BRENDAN EVANS

Classical Guitar Solo

Renowned for his personal and colorful interpretations of the guitar repertoire, Philadelphia guitarist Brendan Evans has performed, won prizes, and taught throughout the USA, Canada, and around the globe.

Brendan left his hometown of Rockport, Massachusetts at the age of 13, and has been playing and studying guitar with increasing intensity since then. Four years at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he studied with Bob Squires and Apostolos Paraskevas, led to to four years at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied with Steve Aron, which led to two years at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied with David Tanenbaum.

In 2004 he spent a year studying flamenco guitar in Granada and Cordoba, Spain, which had a lasting effect on his technique and musical ideas. After graduating in 2008 from the SF Conservatory with a Master’s degree, Brendan moved to Philadelphia, where he now teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and the Settlement Music School.

ABHISEK MALLICK & BIPLAB BHATTACHARYYA

Recipient of the President’s Award from the Govt of India, Abhisek Mallick is a dynamic and brilliant sitarist. He began sitar studies at the age of 7 under Pt. Shyamal Chattopadhyay, disciple of the Late Ustad Md. Dabir Khan (the Last descendant of Mian Tansen) and the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar. Abhisek is a regular performer for All India Radio, Doordarshan and other media channels, and an international concertising musician who has performed in New York City, Atlantic City, Rutgers University, Philadelphia Museum of Arts, Bishwa Banga Sammelan 2010, among others. Presently, Abhisek is involved in several music projects including Pt. Bickram Ghosh’s Rhythmscape, writing film scores notable among which is The Vayuputras (OST for Immortals of Meluha), and is featured in Pt. Subhen Chatterjee’s Bandish Fusion.

Biplab Bhattacharyya is a regular A-Grade artist of All India Radio and Door Darshan. A student of of Pt. Shankar Ghosh, Biplab had taken talim under the maestro since 1993. He has been invited to perform in many festivals across the country such as Doverlane Music Conference, ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra, etc, and internationally including the Queen Elizabeth Hall (UK), National Art Festival (South Africa), Carnegie Hall (USA), Kennedy Centre (USA).

He is an accompanist chosen to perform with celebrated artistes like Late Pt. Srikant Bakre, Late Padma Bhushan Pt.V.G. Jog, Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, Late Pt. V. Balsara, Late Pt. Kumar Prasad Mukherjee, Pt Ulhas Kashalkar, Acharya Jayanta Bose, Pt Tarun Bhattachharya, Pt. Ronu Majumder, among others.

Groomed under the auspices of Pt. Debaprosad Banerjee, Sudip Chattopadhyay is acknowledged to be one of the perfect exponents of Pandit Pannalal Ghosh Gharana.

An MA in music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, graduating in 1991 he was has been a Lecturer of Music for the same University since 2002.

Sudip has performed regularly at important classical festivals; notables are Dover Lane Music Conference, Sangeet Research Academy, Indira Kala Sangeet Sikshayatan (MP), Bharatiya Bidya Bhawan (New Delhi), Rabindra Bharati Festival, ICCR (Kolkata & Delhi), SPICMACAY, Golpark Ramakrishna Mission etc. In 1991 he joined All India Radio and is still performing there and for Door Darshan as an ‘A Grade’ artiste.

One of the leading percussionists of India, a ganda bandh of maestro Pt. Shankar Ghosh, Subrata Gupta is an accomplished and versatile Tabla player. He is a soloist and an accompanist as well. Subrata is a regular artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra (Kolkata). He is also a well-recognized and much wanted accompanist by most of the leading musicians and prestigious classical soirees all over the country.

Kunal Saha, is a versatile Santoor artiste who started music lessons with maestro Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya, at the age of six. Under the guidance of his guru, Kunal has been performing regularly in public and on All India Radio. In 2006, Kunal formed his own band called Blendz, the only Ethnic Electronic Fusion Band that reached the finals of India’s Got Talent (Season 1). Since 2012, Kunal has performed jugalbandi concerts with the talented flautist, Soumyajyoti Ghosh in a duo known as KounterPoint. In 2015, Kunal along co-music composer, Pradyut Chatterjea released Devonix, a unique album of devotional music rendered as electronica and world music. Most recently, Kunal performs with his Sufi Band Aafreen.

Arindam Chakravarty was initiated in tabla by his parents at the age of five under the guidance of Acharya Pt Shankar Ghosh, continued taking lessons from him for 26 years as a “Ganda Bandh. Arindam has been associated and performed with several legends and renowned musicians from all over the world including maestros like Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, to name a few. He has been performing with renowned ensembles like Layavinyas with Vidwan N.Shankar, as well as Indian Blue.

Arindam is an empanelled Artiste of ICCR in the established Artiste Category and EZCC, Ministry of Culture, Govt. Of India. He is a regular All India Radio and television artiste. As a soloist and accompanist he has participated and performed in several noteworthy festivals like Tirupati Balaji Devasthanams Concert, Konark Dance & Music Festival, Bodhi Mahotsav, All Bengal Music Conference, Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra, etc.
