International Western-Music Education Conference 2017

Music educators from across India and the US will gather in Delhi on Sunday, July 23rd for The Western Music Education Association (WMEA) 3rd Annual Music Conference entitled “A New Era for Music Education in India.” This year’s conference will take place at the India International Centre, Lodhi Road, and will feature the NAfME President Denese Odegaard, and the NAfME Western Division President Russ Sperling, who will present keynotes and sessions on music education, including curriculum and standards, and the future of Music Education in India. Our other presenters include Sunit Tandon, President, Delhi Music Society, who will speak about Opera, Indian music performer Saskia de Rao Haas, who will discuss Sangeet4All, and Lindsay Boyd, music teacher and Music Director of the Capital City Minstrels, who will address choir conducting.

WMEA was formed by Natalie Sarrazin PhD, Executive Director, Anjli Mata, President, Ritesh Khokhar, Vice President, and Poonam Burman, Secretary, in 2015, in order to address the lack of support for music education and educators in India, and is confident that through its relationship with NAfME, it will provide education, training, resources, and tools through NAfME’s vast resources (publications, online webinars, research, and advocacy). Recently, Ms. Mata and Mr. Khokhar travelled to the US to attend the NAfME National Assembly. They also joined in the Hill Day initiative to lobby Congress for support of music education, seeing, first hand, how music education advocacy works in the United States.

This year, the conference will also feature a Choir Festival, which will take place on July 22nd at Bluebells School International, East of Kailash from 9am to 1pm. The top 10 choirs will compete for first place, and for an opportunity to perform at Sunday’s Conference. The choirs will be evaluated by an international panel of judges, including NAfME President Odegaard, Western Division President Russ Sperling, and soprano Aude Priya Engel.

Sponsorship for the events include the Australian Institute of Music, Inder Mohan Foundation (KCT Group).

The Choir Festival is free and open to the public. The conference requires prior registration and a 500/- fee.
