Martyn Brabbins is Music Director of the English National Opera (ENO) and the Huddersfield Choral Society. This programme will feature Brabbins leading Weber’s Overture to Oberon, or The Elf King’s Oath and Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 with SOI Music Director and renowned violin virtuoso Marat Bisengaliev as the soloist. To end the evening, Brabbins will conduct Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. After his First Symphony received harsh criticisms, Rachmaninoff began to doubt his symphonic writing, despite the success of his piano concerti. Nonetheless, he pushed himself to complete the work and it premiered to great acclaim, earning him a Glinka prize. Alongside his piano concerti, the Second Symphony is one of Rachmaninoff’s best-known works today.
This performance runs approximately 120 minutes, with one intermission.
