Beethoven: Fantasy for piano, vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, Op. 80 “Choral Fantasy”

Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

On February 9 & 10, Martyn Brabbins will conduct the SOI and joint choirs from India and abroad in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, hailed by The Guardian as “arguably the central artwork of Western music”. The Ninth Symphony includes the famous “Ode to Joy”, sung to text based on a poem by Friedrich Schiller.

The concert also includes Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy”, a piano concerto movement, bringing in a choir and vocal soloists for the climax nearing the finale. Written before the Ninth Symphony, it is widely regarded as a forerunner to the Ninth, particularly given the similarity in the main themes.

Internationally-renowned cast of soloists will—Andreas Haefliger, Sophie Bevan, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Amar Muchhala, and Neal Davies—will join the Kazakh State Capella and Living Voices Mumbai, and the SOI for these performances.

This performance runs approximately 120 minutes, with one intermission.
